Brief Introduction of Geocell Confinement System

  There are two common problems at the junction of old and new roads: one is that the design is not comprehensive, and there are many technical difficulties in construction; the other is that the strength of the old road is insufficient and the thickness of the reinforcement layer is thin. The use of geogrid can make up for the deficiencies in design and construction, and improve the tightness of the new and old joints. Taking a highway project as an example, the original width of the pavement is 9 m, and now it is expanded to 15 m. The pavement structure layers from top to bottom are: AC-13 asphalt concrete layer, AC-20 asphalt concrete layer, cement stabilized gravel layer, graded gravel layer. Using glass fiber geogrid material, the breaking strength is ≥50 kN/m, the breaking elongation is ≥3%, the grid size is 25.4mm×25.4mm, and the width is 5m. After the construction is completed, the line can pass smoothly, and the appearance and quality are better than the old pavement structure; compared with the replacement and graded gravel method, the use of geogrid not only reduces the cost, but also saves maintenance costs, showing good social and economic benefits. 

Geogrid System Characteristic

  When the external force acts on the grid unevenly, the mesh will deform due to the transverse tensile stress, which shows the restraint effect and has strong adaptability to the non-uniform distributed load. The geogrid has high friction resistance. When used as reinforcement, it can enhance the shear strength of the structural layer and improve the overall stability.

Laying method

  After the subgrade is leveled and compacted, the geogrid shall be laid in time and positioned according to the design requirements, and the soil shall be filled and covered in time after anchoring, so as to shorten the exposure time as much as possible. If necessary, backfill can be done at the same time as the grid is laid to improve paving efficiency. In terms of specific operation, firstly, the filler is spread on both ends, and after fixing the grid, it is gradually advanced to the middle. During the rolling operation, follow the rolling sequence of the two sides first, then the middle. The pressing wheel cannot directly contact the grille, and cannot drive on the uncompacted reinforced body. During the layer-by-layer compaction, the thickness of each layer is controlled at 20-30 cm, and indicators such as compaction and flatness are checked in time to meet the design requirements.

Application:

  In soft soil high fill engineering, laying geogrid in the middle of 30-50 cm gravel layer can form geogrid gravel cushion and give full play to the reinforcement role of excavated geogrid. On the one hand, the geogrid has strong shear resistance, which can effectively prevent the gravel from falling into the soft foundation, and promote the grid and gravel to be embedded closely to form a stable whole. On the other hand, the geogrid will form a horizontal plane in terms of drainage, which can be used as a drainage channel. After the subgrade is formed, it can effectively reduce the soil moisture content. Third, the geogrid is laid above the soft foundation, which will produce isolation effect,
It is not only convenient for construction, but also can restrain the lateral deformation of foundation and reduce uneven settlement. Fourth, increase the shear resistance of soil and change the physical and mechanical properties of soft foundation.
